What Are You Currently Reading?

I’m currently reading American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. I understand this is a controversial book, so I was a little hesitant to read it.

I also just purcahsed Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and Bear Town by Fredrik Backman. I started both of these through my library’s digital resources, however I wanted to read them in paperback format. I’m excited to own both of these books! I love their covers!

I just finished The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare and I’m in awe. This is such a powerful, heart-wrenching book from such an unique and beautiful voice. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Just from turning the first few pages, I had a sense I was going to love this book and my inclination wasn’t wrong. This book amazed me. The books I rate 5/5 stars are books which on top of being well written and with well developed characters and plot lines, also do something emotionally for me. This was certainly one of them. Adunni is a fourteen-year-old Nigerian girl who is sold by her father as a third wife to a man decades older than her in exchange for money for rent and food. At the hands of her new husband, she experiences things no fourteen year old should have to experience, as well as being bullied by one of the other wives. When tragedy occurs, Adunni flees the life she’s been living, hoping to find escape and respite in a new city. However, she is soon sold as a housemaid to a harsh mistress in Lagos. Here she is continually abused by her mistress, Big Mama, while also experiencing sexual advances from Big Mama’s husband. Through it all she continues to carry with her a dream—a dream for schooling and education. Adunni’s story is about heartbreak, injustice and abuse, and it is also much,much more than that. Adunni is more than what happened to her. She is a girl with a beautiful, courageous spirit and a deep planted desire for learning and education. She wants a voice, a ‘Louding’ voice. Her voice has been stifled and stolen by the choices and actions of others, and yet what a voice she has. In broken English, with unique and endearing prose, Adunni’s character is lifelike and connectable. She is so real and honest and breathtakingly unique. Reading this book I heard Adunni’s voice; felt like I was there too. This is a character and story I’ll remember long after I close the pages. I recently finished reading The Girl with the Louding Voice. This book was spectacular and it’s one of my favourites for 2020!

What Are You Going to Read Next?

I’ve only started the first first few pages of Homegoing and Bear Town so I’ll be reading those next after American Dirt. I also have Hamnet and Judith (also known as Hamnet) by Maggie O’Farrell courtesy of Net Galley and Will of a Flying Tiger by Iris Yang (the sequel to Wings of a Flying Tiger which I reviewed here) courtesy of Open Books, so those are the two digital books I’ll be reading.

I’m also loving reading in my backyard. It just makes the reading experience all the more enjoyable!

  1. This is great! I hadn’t come across these titles myself until now (not that I can remember anyway),
    Currently reading Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, just finished reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and next up I am re reading Why Im no longer talking to white people about race by Reni Eddo-Lodge (it’s that good).

    1. That’s great! The Namesake is on my list as well as The Goldfinch. Thanks for the book recommendations! They all sound so good! I have heard many good things about Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race.

  3. I just finished “HomeGoing” it is so beyond anything I have ever read 🧡Currently reading “the poisonwood bible” —it was highly recommend to me. Enjoy your reads, they seem really good!

    1. I know this is a controversial novel. Personally, I enjoyed it, however I’ve read some reviews and understand the complaints. I know it has its errors, and I also found the storyline compelling and needed to know what would happen to the characters.

      1. Yes, I did hear a lot about the controversies surrounding the novel but it didn’t diminish my interest; it only added to it. I guess it’s going to be part of my July reading journey, together with The Girl With the Louding Voice. Happy reading!
